The basement membrane’s major component is type IV collagen

The brain contains three ECM compartments: perineuronal nets, interstitial matrix, and basement membrane. Type IV collagen is the major component of the basement membrane in the cerebral vasculature. Disruption of this basement membrane is a hallmark of MS lesions and blood-brain barrier breakdown.
