Hepatic Diseases

Biomarkers for Hepatic Diseases

Nordic Bioscience’s hepatic biomarkers can be of great value in hepatic diseases and liver conditions with fibrotic involvement such as MASH, MASLD, Viral Liver Disease, Immune-Mediated Liver Disease (AIH, PBC and PSC), Alcohol-related Liver Disease (ALD) and similar conditions, including biomarkers for liver cancer.

Biomarkers for alcohol-related liver disease (ALD)

Diagnosis and prediction of disease progression in Alcohol-related Liver Disease (ALD), especially in cirrhosis, has proven difficult. Our diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers have the potential to greatly benefit patients by helping in the early diagnosis of the disease and initiating the most appropriate treatment at the right time.

Biomarkers for end-stage liver disease

End-stage liver disease consists of advanced stages of liver fibrosis (F3-F4) due to chronic damage and scaring resulting in cirrhosis and acute liver failure. Nordic Bioscience’s biomarkers are designed to specifically target the dynamics of collagen deposition, which is the main cause of liver scarring in cirrhosis.

Biomarkers for immune-mediated liver diseases (PSC, PBC, AIH)

There is an urgent need for novel biomarkers that can adequately determine the risk of disease progression as well as early response to treatment. Fibrosis is a key histological feature of immune-mediated liver disease; however, the severity of liver fibrosis is primarily determined by liver biopsy. Our biomarkers are being used in clinical trials to detect rapid disease progression and monitor treatment efficacy.

Biomarkers for MASLD and MASH (formerly NAFLD and NASH)

Non-invasive biomarkers of liver function (such as PRO-C3) that specifically target the dynamics of liver fibrosis provide a novel tool for determining patient outcome. Our collaborators use Nordic biomarkers for patient risk stratification and prognostic enrichment in clinical trials targeting high-need, high-risk patients to increase the likelihood of success. In addition, our biomarkers are direct measures of liver fibrosis dynamics and are also used to determine treatment efficacy.

Biomarkers for metabolic dysregulation

Metabolic diseases like MAFLD/MASH, kidney disease, and heart failure often involve increased fibroblast activity and fibrosis. Our biomarkers provide key insights into disease activity and risk, supporting earlier diagnosis, better patient stratification, and treatment monitoring.

Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF™) Test

The ELF™ test is a validated, non-invasive blood test for assessing liver fibrosis in chronic liver and metabolic diseases. By measuring three key fibrosis markers, it delivers a combined score that outperforms traditional methods like APRI and FIB-4—supporting earlier diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment decisions without the need for biopsy.

Viral liver diseases

Viral liver diseases, such as hepatitis B and C, are major global health challenges that often lead to chronic inflammation and liver fibrosis. While traditional diagnostics provide some insight, there remains a significant need for non-invasive tools that can more accurately predict disease progression, monitor treatment response, and stratify patients for clinical trials. At Nordic Bioscience, our ProteinFingerPrint™ biomarkers offer a novel approach to quantifying liver tissue remodeling in viral hepatitis—enabling earlier intervention, supporting drug development, and guiding personalized treatment strategies.

Translational models in hepatic fibrosis

Nordic Bioscience  integrates innovative translational models with the Nordic Bioscience ProteinFingerPrint Technology™  to translate findings efficiently. By using the same biomarkers throughout various clinical development stages, they create a seamless link between preclinical models and clinical applications. This strategically chosen development pathway significantly boosts the efficiency of drug development pipelines.
