Morten A. Karsdal, MsC, PhD, Professor has in the last 11 years focused his research on the discovery and development of novel biochemical makers. This has resulted in the development of more than 15 ELISA assays that have been used for research in the fields of fibrosis, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. One of these assays has been 510(k) approved by the FDA.

This biochemical marker research has been performed based on a platform of pharmacology in bone, cartilage, diabetes, fibrosis and atherosclerosis. The preclinical and clinical pharmacology has resulted in identification of a novel treatment for osteoporosis (ClC-7), two possible intervention opportunities for osteoarthtis (salmon calcitonin and selective estrogen modulators (SERMS)) and finally a novel treatment opportunity for type II diabetes.

The biochemical markers have been carefully investigated and validated for their utility in pathology according to the BIPED criteria (Burden of disease, Investigatory, Prognosis, Efficacy of intervention and Diagnosis). Special focus on biochemical markers of extra cellular matrix remodeling, degradation and formation of tissues, and translational research in relation to the “critical path” as outlined by the FDA has been applied.

This work has been done by project management in inter-disciplinary teams of pharmacology, diagnostic tools and drug development, in which members of projects teams have been positioned at many locations around the world.

In summary this has resulted in: 115 publications in peer reviewed journals in the last 11 years. 2269 citations, H-index = 27. 10 PhD students and 12 master thesis students supervised. 8 international research awards, including the “Ian T Boyle Award, for significant contribution to bone research, presented by the “European calcified tissue society” (ECTS). Lastly, for the commercial side – the research has resulted in more than 20 patent applications, which form the basis of a range of collaborations with pharmaceutical companies.
