Identification of disease-specific biomarkers in blood and serum is challenging due to the presence of multiple non-specific proteins in the circulation. Nordic Bioscience has developed a method for identifying and quantifying disease-specific protein fragments that exceeds the specificity of gold standard biomarkers with regards to biological relevance and scientific rationale. Using this unique Protein Fingerprint™ technology, pathologically modified proteins have been identified and shown to be different from normal intact proteins. The assays, which have been subsequently developed and validated accurately, precisely and robustly, quantify these disease-specific protein fragments in body liquids. In one validated example, Nordic Bioscience uses separate serological tests to detect fragments of the same protein, which are shed during protein formation or protein degradation, and are thus able to quantify structural tissue formation or degradation.
